NEMT and Home Health: An Exciting Opportunity

As is the case for many industries, NEMT’s opportunities for industry growth depend heavily on looking for more and more places where it can be relevant. In recent years, we’ve seen NEMT fill a need for delivery of samples for testing, lab results, and prescriptions, especially at the height of the pandemic. Now that the world has opened back up, it’s important to look for more ways that we can support excellent care and business growth.

We don’t need to look any further for one of these opportunities than home healthcare. Various branches of healthcare benefit from collaboration, so why would NEMT and this industry be any different? We’d like to put forth three distinct opportunities:

Offer Transportation in Tandem with Existing Services
NEMT software already helps NEMT brokers, and all manner of industry professionals keep their day-to-day functioning efficient and simplified. Thanks to how customizable the right software can be, we know there’s significant potential for a home health provider to coordinate their current services along with transport to bring their current offerings—and quality of care—to a new level.

Support Caregivers in the Field with Important Deliveries
No matter what kind of caregiver may be working with a home health care organization, they will likely need something to assist them in their care that they don’t have on the premises. While this may not be an issue for some home health care recipients, others are in palliative care, have limited mobility, or may require round-the-clock care. But these same care recipients may also need certain medications or equipment that has run out.

The answer lies in something that NEMT is uniquely suited to perform: home deliveries.

Each person has their own unique care needs. Some people may need home-delivered meals, others may need prescriptions delivered. Quality of care could increase dramatically when a home health provider doesn’t have to leave or wait for a prolonged period to get what they need to deliver supplies for care or daily essentials. Meal and prescription delivery could help with this, but it could even go as far as grocery delivery. Every moment counts in care, so enabling care professionals to keep their focus is a serious asset that can’t be underestimated.

Augment Home Health Organizations with Transportation Support
Limits in transportation don’t just affect care recipients, they also affect caregivers. This is one of the more exciting opportunities presented for home health care: removing a key barrier to entry to their industry. When you require your health care workers to own a car to work with you, the potential employment pool is limited. By offering transportation assistance to home care workers, the door to employment opens opportunities for more qualified care professionals.

This can go further in helping forgotten communities in remote areas, which we’ve already explored how NEMT can help on its own. If an NEMT provider is already making a point of going out to rural communities, it just makes sense for home health care providers to work with them. It provides an opportunity to provide care to under-served communities and utilize an untapped market.
